July 4, 2009 Statue of Liberty Crown reopened Play video

(NECN/ABC) - For the first time in many years the crown at the top of the Statue of Liberty has reopened for viewing.

For nearly 8 years the Statue Of Liberty's crown has been closed to the public.

Anthony Weiner described the experience of climbing into the crown: "Cramped; it's hot; it's humid; our hearts are beating, and it's exciting. You know this is what the experience is all about; you know, it's not for everyone, but you haven't really done Lady Liberty until you've gotten up here to the crown. And I'll tell you something else, you know, I can just see a little bit of a smile on Lady Liberty's face, to have it back, re- opened, and the so many millions of people, like myself, who came up here when we were small children. Now, another generation of small children will be able to come up, and, I've got to tell you; it's pretty thrilling to look out these windows."

The base, pedestal and outdoor observation deck reopened in 2004.
