(NECN/WABC: Staten Island, NY) - Some 42,000 runners will propel themselves through the five boroughs in the New York Road Runners and ING New York City Marathon on Sunday (11/1).
The marathon begins at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island and finishes in Central Park.
Representatives from the Fire Department of New York City, the New York Police Department, the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard and the Sanitation Department have been planning the race with the New York Road Runners club since the day after last year's marathon.
Hundreds of volunteers and marathon workers will work right up till race time, setting up fences, putting up signs and installing broadcast equipment.
Of the expected 42,000 runners an estimated 14,000 female runners will participate which is triple the number that ran the race 20 years ago.
