Fort Hood shooting suspect alive; death toll remains at 12

(NECN: Fort Hood, TX) - At least 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Central Texas. The incident unfolded mid-afternoon when shots were fired at the base's soldier readiness center, a place where soldiers who are about to be deployed or are returning home undergo medical screening.

Officials have identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist who was about to deploy overseas.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone says the suspected shooter is alive, and in stable condition. Cone says, "his death is not imminent".

Cone says the base is no longer in lock down, but will continue to operate at a heightened level of security.
