(NECN: Greg Wayland) - Fort Hood, Texas was the scene of a deadly shooting rampage Thursday. Thirteen people were killed, 30 others were wounded.
The shooter has been identified as an Army psychiatrist named Nidal Malik Hasan.
Lt. Gen. Bob Cone says the suspected shooter is alive, and in stable condition. Cone says, "his death is not imminent".
Cone says the base is no longer in lock down, but will continue to operate at a heightened level of security.
Located halfway between Austin and Waco, Fort Hood is one of the largest U.S. Military installations in the world.
The Associated Press is reporting that the suspect drew attention to himself months ago with Internet posts. That remains unconfirmed.
The AP is citing anonymous sources and reporting that the suspected shooter came to the attention of federal authorities at least six months ago because of internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
An officials investigation is about to begin.
