| November 6, 2009 Fort Hood update: 13 dead, 30 injured; suspect hospitalized
|
(NECN) - Fort Hood officials say in all the chaos yesterday afternoon there was a miscommunication about the condition of the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan.
But Lt. General Robert Cone assures the public law enforcement officials were with Hasan the entire time, and continue to be with him now at the hospital.
We're now learning more about the suspect in this shooting that left 13 people dead and 30 injured.
Federal law enforcement officials now say Hasan had been on their radar for at least the past six months because of internet postings where Hasan allegedly discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
In them he allegedly compared suicide bombers to G.I.'s who save other troops by throwing themselves on a grenade.
The 39-year-old is a licensed psychiatrist who had recently transferred to Fort Hood from Walter Reed Army medical center.
He was scheduled to deploy to Iraq later this month.
But family members are saying he had wanted to get out of the military since 2001, even hiring a lawyer to try to get him out of his deployment.
Yesterday at 1:30pm, Hasan allegedly opened fire at Fort Hood's processing center.
"God bless these soldiers and these great army civilians the quick reaction," Cone said. "People tell stories of soldiers ripping their uniforms apart and basically applying first aid we put a great investment in soldier's first aid and taking care of each other I'm sure this could
have been much worse as horrible as this was I think it could have been much worse."
"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas," Pres. Barack Obama said. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."
As a psychiatrist on the base, Hasan counseled soldiers daily.
Some of those soldiers are speculating that hearing the horrifying stories of war were just too much for him to bear - especially with the prospect of deploying in just weeks.
