(NECN: Washington, D.C.) - President Barack Obama returned to the White House with first lady Michelle Obama on Saturday, ready to host about 1,200 military families for 4th of July festivities in the evening.
The White House will be hosting the holiday barbecue and fireworks show, including a performance by the Foo Fighters.
The 233rd birthday of the United States coincided with the 11th of Malia Obama. The first family held a birthday party for Malia at presidential retreat Camp David.
Upon stepping off Marine One, the first couple took time to shake hands and speak with White House visitors.
Mr. Obama leaves Washington on Sunday to start a trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana.
