Three people were seriously injured in a major car crash on Interstate 95 near Attleboro, Massachusetts, Thursday evening, prompting authorities to shut down traffic in multiple lane and disrupting traffic, state police said.
They said at around 6 p.m., a 2005 Ford Explorer traveling northbound near Exit 3 in Attleboro crossed the median and struck a car head-on in the southbound lane. A third vehicle traveling southbound was also involved in the crash.
Massachusetts State Police said the driver of the Explorer, a 33-year-old Stoughton man, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. Attleboro Fire Department also took a 21-year-old Attleboro man with serious injuries and a 52-year-old Providence, Rhode Island, man with potentially serious injuries to Rhode Island Hospital, according to state police.
Earlier sources indicated a medical helicopter was at the scene; however, state police said that while one did respond, the request was canceled before it had landed.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, state police said.
Traffic was at a near standstill, with cars passing on the grass shoulder, until about 8:30 p.m., when all lanes reopened.
