Officials Rescue Climber Injured in 30-Foot Fall

Conservation officers and numerous other rescuers responded

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials say they rescued an injured Massachusetts rock climber from Humphrey's Ledge in Bartlett Sunday.

Officials say 33-year-old Philip Giampietro of Boston lost his handhold at about 10:40 a.m. while climbing the steep ledge and fell 30 feet before the rope stopped his fall. They say he hit the ledge on the way down and likely fractured his leg, making it impossible for him to descend the 150 feet to the base on his own power.

Conservation officers and numerous other rescuers responded. Mountain Rescue Service team members ascended the ledge, stabilized his leg, then lowered him in a litter to the ground.

Officials say he reached the ground at about 2:45 p.m. and was taken to Memorial Hospital in North Conway for treatment.
