Police and fire officials evacuated people from several streets in Stamford after a truck carrying a flammable chemical overturned in an industrial park on Fairfield Avenue, but the evacuations are over.
Officials from the Stamford Fire Department said the truck was carrying 34,000 pounds of Methyl Methacrylate, which is a flammable chemical, so fire officials established an initial “safe zone” and evacuated people in the immediate area.
Fire officials said the driver who was carrying chemicals that are used to make plastic glass turned about a block before the manufacturing company, got lost, tried to make a u-turn and flipped over.
No leaks were visible and the container was intact, but officials wanted to take precautions while moving the vehicle upright. The container remained intact.
It took around 45 minutes to an hour to move everyone away from the scene.
The truck driver was not hurt and no one in the immediate area has reported getting sick for having been injured.
Stamford EMS, members of the Stamford fire marshal's office, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Stamford Police and Connecticut State Police all responded to work with the Stamford Fire Department.
No additional information was immediately available.
