Police are investigating a shooting during an Afro-Caribbean festival near the campus of MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m., police say a 25-year-old woman was shot in the leg at the corner of Main Street and Portland Street, located by the edge of the campus. The victim, a resident of Boston's Roxbury neighborhood, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Cambridge Carnival, described as "a colorful and festive celebration that is rooted in African traditions," was going on at the time.
Chaos continued at the scene of the festival. About an hour after the initial attack, noises that sounded like gunshots sent the crowd running down Albany Street.
Fights broke out and some people were caught up in the stampede. Many people with cuts and other wounds were taken away on stretchers.

MIT Police initially announced that they were investigating the report of a shooter on campus. They later said that the incident happened off campus.
The school's grounds were initially locked down. People on campus were asked to evacuate or seek shelter. Officials also advised people to lock and barricade doors. That lockdown has since been lifting.
Albany Street, which cuts through the MIT campus, was barricaded off by a line of police officers.
The shooter remains at large, police say.
