Mass. AG Sets Up Hotline for Market Basket Employees

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has opened a dedicated hotline for Market Basket employees given recent developments in the ongoing supermarket saga.

The hotline can be reached by calling (617) 963-2400.

In a press release issued Thursday, Coakley said her office has received more than 100 calls in the last 24 hours, and expects more in the coming days. Market Basket announced this week that it would be cutting all part-time hours until the conflict is resolved.

"Market Basket is a major employer in Massachusetts, and we remain hopeful that the parties will come together to reach a positive resolution and restore the vibrancy of the business," Coakley said. "WIth the rapidly evolving circumstances, we have established this hotline to answer questions directly from workers and make sure their rights are being protected."

Last week, Coakley and New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster sent a letter to Market Basket's leadership team reminding them of the laws surrounding worker terminations.

Foster also issued a press release Thursday saying his office is receiving numerous calls from Market Basket employees reporting that they have been laid off. But unlike Massachusetts, he said the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office does not handle employment issues. Anyone with questions about unemployment benefits is asked to call New Hampshire Employment Security at (603) 223-6126 or file an application online at www.nhes.nh.gov.

Any workers who feel like their rights have been violated by Market Basket is urged to file a formal complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Fair Labor Division by calling the hotline or filling out the complaint form found at this link.
