Police say a crash on the Maine Turnpike caused a car containing handguns and ammunition to catch fire and 40 bullets went off during a 10-minute span.

Police say a crash on the Maine Turnpike caused a car containing handguns and ammunition to catch fire and 40 bullets went off during a 10-minute span.

The accident occurred in Portland when a car slammed into a tractor trailer as it was slowing down. Car occupants 20-year-old Travis Veilleux of Winslow and 20-year-old Stephanie Pleau of Vassalboro and the truck driver were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they do not have the name of the truck driver.

Police say Veilleux's car caught fire after the crash. Four other vehicles also collided in the aftermath of the accident.

Police say Veilleux will likely be charged with causing the accident.
