(NECN) - For the past two years the number of people using supermarket coupons has been climbing.

The average coupon clipper saves about a thousand dollars-a-year on groceries.

Tips:

In store kiosks: scan your loyalty card and you'll get coupons based on your purchase history. Watch the back of your register receipt in some stores.

Organize: You can buy a coupon wallet that has had dividers or you can use a couple of envelopes.  Sort them so you can find them. that probably means categorizing them: maybe food vs non-food. If you have a lot, you can refine it further. anytime you're looking through them for a coupon, throw out expired coupons.

Select a store: Look for stores that doubles coupons

Be flexible: If you've never tried other brands, this is the time to do it.

Work menu around sales: If you've been thinking about trying something new, do it when you can stack up a sale price plus a coupon, maybe trying a new cereal for $1.50.

Another kind of flexibility is to plan some meals around the best deals. If there's a great sale plus coupon on eggs, have frittata for dinner this week. if canned corn is the big deal, try making corn chowder.
