Haverhill, Mass. Man Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assaults

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Haverhill man has been sentenced to up to 35 years in prison after admitting to breaking into several city homes and sexually assaulting five women over a 16-month period in 2006 and 2007.

Jose Vega pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Salem Superior Court to charges including four counts of aggravated rape and five counts of indecent assault and battery.

He was sentenced to 28 to 35 years in prison.

Prosecutors called the 36-year-old Vega a "predator" who broke into homes within a mile of his own apartment and in three cases held a knife or sharp object to the victim's throat. He was tied to the crime scenes through DNA. He has been held without bail since his July 2007 arrest.

The Eagle-Tribune reports that in court Vega asked for forgiveness.
