Meier Meets With Prosecutors, DAs Over Drug Lab Scandal

(NECN: Jennifer Eagan, Boston)  – There are some new developments in the state drug lab scandal in Massachusetts.

The attorney chosen to review cases held an important meeting Monday afternoon in Boston.

David Meier met with prosecutors, defense attorneys, and district attorneys.

His job is to review thousands of cases that involved Annie Dookhan, the former chemist accused of deliberately mishandling drug samples at the lab.

Meier announced they have identified 1,140 individuals serving state sentences right now whose drug evidence was tested by Doohkan, possibly meaning their conviction may be jeopardized by her involvement.  Next, Meier will be trying to figure out who is in federal prison, on probation, or already served a sentence.

Meier is not a part of the criminal investigation.  He and his co-workers are simply identifying where the cases went once Doohkan tested the drug evidence and then handing that information over to prosecutors and defense attorneys.  They will decide what to do with those individuals.

State police say Dookhan handled samples covering 34,000 defendants in the nine years she worked at the lab.

The district attorneys and Meier have decided to prioritize cases in which someone is serving time in state prison or county jail.

Hours earlier, a career criminal was granted his release due to the mishandling of samples.
