(TV Diner) - The historic Gelston House, neighbor to the Goodspeed Opera house in charming East Haddam, Conn., is a picturesque dining destination with gorgeous views of the Connecticut River. It has been documented that as early as 1736, buildings housing various businesses including a tavern, were located on this very site, where in 1853, the current building was erected.
The menu focuses on classic New England style fare including such items as fish and chips and burgers, as well as meat and fish entrees. Diners can choose the outdoor patio menu or the seasonal menu featured in the dining room.
We started with the New England Steamers. Served in a white wine herb broth, these babies were plump and tender with a fresh, sweet flavor.
Next up was the Fried Calamari served with marinara. Comprised of all rings and no tentacles..it arrived just a touch overcooked.
The Hot Grilled Lobster Roll was delicious. Actually two rolls served with luscious French fries,, they were loaded with lobster and not overloaded with butter. We did wish the roll was toasted with some as it was a bit blah without..
The Filet Medallions melted in your mouth. Glazed with mushroom sauce and accompanied by mashed potatoes and julienned vegetables, these were a hit.
The Carrot Cake was tall and luscious. Layers of cake alternated with cream cheese frosting for a sinful treat plentiful enough to share.
The Raspberry Cheesecake, cool and creamy, was refreshing on this summer night.
Service was excellent at The Gelston House. Despite the busy evening with the exiting Goodspeed patrons flooding over, our server was able to keep up and remain attentive.
Local
We found the value to be very good with large portions and great quality. Appetizers were priced from $5-$13, Entrees from $15-$22 and desserts around $7.
Overall we rate The Gelston House a Gold Plate for a very good dining experience. We hear they do occasionally feature entertainment, offer brunch and outdoor and indoor dining.
