Blizzard Hits New England's South Coast

National Weather Service's blizzard warning was expanded to include Cape Cod for overnight.

Powerful low-pressure east of New Jersey will pass southeast of Nantucket with heavy snow continuing along the south coast most of the night.

Storm force wind out over the ocean with gusts past 70 mph, gusting 50 to 60 mph right along the coast. That combination of heavy snow and strong wind causes multiple power outages from Connecticut to Cape Cod in the islands including south of Boston.

Snowfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour will gradually taper from west to east after midnight.

The temperature is very close to freezing where it is snowing near the shore, making it a potentially more hazardous situation due to the stickiness of the snow weighing down tree branches and power lines. .

The last place to see the snow is Cape Cod and the islands just after sunrise with a widespread 12 to 18 inches of sticky snow.

The Boston area getting between 2 and 4 inches of snow westward along and south of the mass pike is about the same.

Across Vermont New Hampshire and Maine the skies are fair with temperatures falling into the teens overnight.

We do have a full moon tonight, so that means the tide is running strong. A coastal flood advisory is in effect for tomorrow morning's high tide along the south and east facing shores of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

But at that time the wind is coming from the northwest so it is mostly an offshore wind, with the exception of the north side of Cape Cod and Nantucket.

Seas of 10 to 15 feet combined with winds gusting past 40 mph, will create an additional 1 to 3 foot surgeon at high tide Sunday morning.

Minor, to perhaps moderate, flooding may occur.

Sunday afternoon turns breezy and dry with sunshine, high temperature in the 30s, for a nice afternoon.

High-pressure passes over with sunshine for Monday, high temperature in the 30s.

A front in the middle of the United States approaches on Tuesday, with a warmer wind from the south, high temperature in the 40s south to 30s north.

Mixed rain and snow showers arrive from west to east late Tuesday and overnight.

Much colder air arrives on Wednesday, with a period of snow possible before turning windy and much colder with temperatures in the 20s later Wednesday and Thursday.
