A 22-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday night outside of his home in Brockton, Massachusetts, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced Sunday.

Just before 9 p.m. Saturday, Brockton police were alerted to multiple shots fired in the area of 117 Belmont Avenue, which is just feet away from a children's playground and right across the street from a church.

Upon arrival, officers found a victim, later identified as Ailson Barbosa, lying on the steps of his Brockton home suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Barbosa was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It's very sad for our city, and especially the young people," said Vena Ulyssa, a pastor at United Evangelical Christian Church across the street from where the fatal shooting happened.

Pastor Ulyssa says the shooting was the talk of Sunday's service and says one of her parishioners dodged the gunfire.

"She was practically afraid for herself, for her life, for her kids, and she even had one of the bullets that went through her house," Ulyssa said.

Brockton resident Gueldine Velme said it's very sad to see that happen in the area.

"We were very sad about it," Velme said.
