An East Haven, Connecticut, police officer was attacked by a dog while on patrol early Tuesday morning and shot the animal, according to police.
The officer was on patrol near Oceanview Towing on Coe Avenue in the Momauguin section of East Haven just before 3 a.m. when he saw a dog, identified as a pit-bull mix, roaming, police said.
When the officer got out of the car to investigate, the dog attacked him, so the officer fired his gun.
The dog was shot, but ran away and is alive, according to police. The officer was not hurt.
The incident was recorded on the officer’s body camera and police said the initial review “clearly shows an unprovoked attack by the dog.”
The department notified the owner of the dog and East Haven Animal Control.
An internal affairs officer is investigating and the Department of Justice and the Joint Compliance Expert was notified, according to department policy.
