Jewelry ripped from necks of woman during robbery in Boston

The victims say their stolen necklaces have both monetary and sentimental value

A thief swiped sentimental jewelry right off the necks of two women during a robbery in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood on Sunday.

It happened near the corner of Dudley and Clarence streets around 8:30 p.m. Surveillance video shows a man approaching them from behind and confronting them on a side street off of Dudley Street.

One of the women, 71-year-old Margarida Fidalgo, says she and her cousin were walking home from a family cookout when the man suddenly accosted them out of nowhere.

It all happened very quickly.

"I'm lucky I'm alive," said Fidalgo.

The suspect pointed a gun at both women, before snatching a gold chain off of each.

"The guy put his hand on my shoulder," said Fidalgo. "I screamed. He showed me the gun."

The chains are Portuguese gold, valued at about $1,000 each.

The pendant of Fidalgo's chain was found on the ground.

It has sentimental value — she gave the chain and pendant to her late son years ago.

The suspect took off and has not been caught.

"He's going to hurt somebody," said Fidalgo. "You can tell he has experience."

The suspect is described as 5-foot-3 or 5-foot-4 and was wearing a black hoodie with the hood up, a face covering, and black pants. He spoke Spanish, according to the victim.
