Fire causes extensive damage to Kingston, Mass., shopping plaza

No injuries were reported

Firefighters responded to a fire in a supermarket located in a shopping plaza in Kingston, Massachusetts, on Friday morning.

The Kingston Fire Department responded to an alarm activation at the Big Y Supermarket Plaza, also known as Kingsbury Square, at 182 Summer St., around 8 a.m. Friday. Upon arrival, they found smoke and fire conditions within a unit at that location.

Smoke was seen coming from the vents at a Super Cuts hair salon, and heavy smoke was visible in two other storefronts as well. A fire in a bathroom and ceiling area was discovered in Super Cuts and was extuinguished with help from neighboring fire departments.

Firefighters continued to check for extension and ventilate the adjacent storefronts.

No injuries were reported.

The Super Cuts storefront sustained heavy damage, with moderate damage to other stores, fire officials said.

Kingston police said the plaza is a multiple unit commercial space, and multiple businesses were forced to close for the day.

Police and fire were expected to remain on scene to ensure that the property was safe before turning it back over to the various store managers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but police said initial assessments appear to show that it was the result of a mechanical failure in the HVAC system.
