Police say one student was arrested after another was stabbed at Goodrich Academy.
A student was stabbed and another arrested at a Fitchburg, Massachusetts, school on Wednesday, the town's mayor said.
The stabbing at Goodrich Academy appeared to be targeted, and the student who was hurt and rushed to a nearby hospital has injuries that aren't life threatening, Mayor Sam Squailia said in a post on social media.
The 15-year-old student who was taken into custody was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Squailia said. While police were continuing to investigate, she said, there was no longer believed to be a threat to other students.
The school was briefly placed on lockdown, and students were eventually dismissed around 3 p.m. An ambulance, police cars and a fire truck were seen outside the school Wednesday afternoon.
Students will be back in school Thursday and Friday, Superintendent Jon Thompson said in a message to parents, noting that a police officer would join additional staff at the school, and that therapy pets and counselors will be brought in as well.
"The Fitchburg Public Schools is working closely with Fitchburg Police Department to further investigate teh situation to ensure safety for all students and staff," Thompson said.
