Pickup speeds past police, crashes into electrical substation in Gardner

A pickup truck that sped through an crash scene in Gardner, Massachusetts, on Tuesday ended up crashed into an electrical substation off the highway, police said.

The pickup's driver had to be rescued — touching highly charged electrical equipment can be fatal — and was taken to Heywood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The truck drove through the scene on Green Street, near Mount Wachusett Community College, about 1:50 p.m., police said. Officers soon heard that the vehicle had crashed through the gate at the National Grid electrical transfer station and hit a utility pole. No one else was hurt in the incident.

The driver's identity wasn't being released as of Tuesday night, as police continued to investigate what took place.

Footage from the scene showed the black pickup, the broken fence perched on top, after appearing to slam into a column. The driver appeared to be inside.
