Human remains were found by a person walking their dog in the woods off a residential Saugus, Massachusetts, street Sunday morning, officials said.
The person found the evidence of skeletal remains near Davis Drive shortly after 10 a.m., according to a statement from Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker and Saugus Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli.
Medical examiners were working to determine how the person died and who they were — authorities haven't said who the person is or if they have any leads on identifying them.
However, Tucker and Ricciardelli said there was not believed to be a threat to the public.
State and local police were investigating.
Neighbors on the quiet cul-de-sac were shocked to find a large-scale police investigation on their street Sunday.
"I’ve never seen anybody back there. The only thing back there is coyotes from what I know, but apparently somebody’s been back there," Matthew McKenzie said.
