A man driving a U-Haul caused a serious chain reaction crash that shut the Maine Turnpike in Scarborough Friday night, police said.
The U-Haul's driver was trapped inside the vehicle after it collided with a tanker truck on I-95; he had to be extracted from the vehicle and was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment, Maine State Police said. They didn't share the man's condition.
He is believed to have been tired and inattentive when crashing into the tanker about 6:04 p.m., with the highway already backed up from other crashes, police said.
The tanker was pushed into two other vehicles; the drivers of all three of those vehicles were treated at the scene.
The highway had fully reopened by 9:30 p.m., police said.
