Maine Mill Closing to Eliminate Jobs

Ruud van den Berg, a company vice president, said the major problem is low demand for the type of paper made at the mill

Operators of the Madison Paper Industries mill plan to cease paper making, eliminating 214 jobs in Maine.

The mill's parent company, UPM-Kymmene Inc. and Northern SC Paper Corp., made the announcement Monday morning, and workers are being informed.

Ruud van den Berg, a company vice president, said the major problem is low demand for the type of paper made at the mill. He also said recent duties imposed on subsidized Canadian paper companies didn't have as big of an impact as he'd hoped.

He said the mill will shut down by the end of May. He said some workers will be retained to maintain buildings and operate a dam.
