Maine Turnpike Speed Rising to 70 MPH

Speed limit will remain at 65 mph south of Kittery

The speed limit is going up on parts of the Maine Turnpike this week.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said that the speed limit will be raised by 5 mph to become 70 mph on most of Interstate 95 starting Monday.

The speed limit will remain 65 mph south of Kittery. On the Falmouth Spur, the limit is going up from 50 mph to 60 mph. It will rise from 55 to 60 mph between Scarborough and Falmouth.

Executive Director Peter Mills says it makes sense to raise the limit because the roads are safer and most motorists are already driving faster.

In May, the state boosted the limit from 55 mph to 60 mph and 65 mph to 70 mph on rural sections of I-295 and I-95.
