Residents of northern Maine are thawing out following record-breaking cold temperatures.

Residents of northern Maine are thawing out following record-breaking cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service says a 4-below-zero reading Monday morning set a record for the month of April in Caribou. Records also fell in Houlton and in Presque Isle, where it was 13 below zero.

The cold weather defied the calendar over the weekend, as well, with more than a half-a-foot of snow across parts of northern Maine. Caribou set a daily record of 7.1 inches on Saturday.

Meteorologist Rich Norton says the weather will warm up during the week and hit the 40s by the weekend.
