Recount for Maine's 2nd Congressional District Moving Along

The recount of Maine's 2nd Congressional District race is moving along.

Democratic Secretary of State Matt Dunlap's spokeswoman said election officials processed about 80,000 ballots as of Monday afternoon.

Democratic. Rep-elect Jared Golden won with 142,440 votes, while Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin received 138,931 votes.

Poliquin requested a recount and calls Maine's new voting system that lets voters ranked candidates unconstitutional. He's also asked a federal judge to either declare him the winner or order a second election.

The recount began Dec. 6 and could last four weeks.

State police Wednesday will start collecting ballots from towns with voting machines.

Spokeswoman Kristen Muszynski said early counting moved quickly thanks to some results being pre-sorted due to previous recounts.

But the process will likely slow down once machine counting gets underway.
