A police officer shot a person, sending him to the hospital, during an altercation in Malden Wednesday morning, officials said.
The situation began as a report that a man allegedly attacked and robbed a woman on Eastern Avenue near Warren Avenue, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed. When officers arrived at the scene around 9:15 a.m., they found a man, identified as 31-year-old Dominique Matthew Long, in a fight with a woman. That woman and a witness who called 911 told officers that Long had a knife.
Long allegedly refused to listen to officers' orders to put down items he was carrying, and at one point advanced on officers with a knife. Officers used stun guns, which proved ineffective before an officer on the scene fired their weapon.
A witness told NBC10 Boston he saw a woman chasing after a man with a knife, which he believes was part of the robbery. He said he then saw police use a Taser on the man, who fell to the ground.
Long was taken to a Boston hospital and is currently in stable condition, according to the DA. An officer was also taken to the hospital for treatment but has since been released.
Investigators say the woman involved was walking on Eastern Avenue when Long threw a cup at her and punched her in the head with a closed fist. Long is also accused of taking the woman's iPad as she tried to record him.
Long was charged with armed robbery, assault and battery, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and intimidation of a witness. Long will be arraigned at a later date.
