A man is accused of kidnapping an 80-year-old woman, attempting to kill her and then leaving her for dead in Rhode Island, according to NBC affiliate WJAR.
Steven Henning was arrested Sunday in Providence after a pursuit. He's accused of kidnapping the 80-year-old and taking her to Smithfield.
It started in Ohio, when Henning assaulted his girlfriend, stole her vehicle and drove to Woonsocket, according to the attorney general's office, who said the suspect then stole another car in Burrillville.
To avoid getting caught, Henning started talking to the 80-year-old woman at a Wendy's Saturday night, authorities said.
He's accused of following her to her Coventry home, robbing and assaulting her and then placing her in the back of her own car.
Henning dumped the woman in a wooded area in Smithfield after putting a belt around her neck, the attorney general's office said. The belt was allegedly so tight that the woman became unconscious.
The 80-year-old woman was able to find help and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, reports WJAR.
After being identified as the suspect, Henning took off from officers in a vehicle, prompting a high-speed chase, police said.
He was eventually caught in a home in Providence.
Henning was charged with kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon in a dwelling with intent to commit murder, first-degree robbery, assault on a person over 60 causing serious bodily injury and burglary and larceny of a motor vehicle.
He also faces other charges from other municipalities.
Henning was ordered held without bail in court Monday morning.
