A 24-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Springfield, Massachusetts, overnight.

The Hampden District Attorney's Office said that Springfield police were called to the area of Lyman Street around 1 a.m. and found a man in the doorway of an apartment building with two firearms.

Two officers fired their guns, with one officer striking and wounding the man, officials said. Medical aid was immediately rendered on scene, and the man was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. He was identified Friday as Devin Lewis, of Springfield.

An investigation is being conducted by the district attorney's office and Springfield police. It remained ongoing Friday.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Springfield's mayor and police commissioner expressed condolences for the man who was shot, as well as the officers involved in the incident. They didn't share more information, given the ongoing investigation.
