Thirteen people are displaced following a 3-alarm structure fire that damaged a multi-family home in Lawrence, Massachusetts overnight.
The blaze was reported at about 2:30 a.m. at a home on Forest Street, according to the city's fire department. All 13 residents were able to escape the fire safely after an upstairs neighbor woke a woman and her four children on the first floor, officials said.
Fire crews said the inferno was difficult to access since the home is on a hill. The blaze was too dangerous for firefighters to battle it from the inside, forcing crews to combat the flames from outside the building.
Adding more difficulty to an already complex situation, the chilly temps made water form to ice, causing the grounds to be slick. One firefighter suffered a slip and fall injury after ice developed.
Firefighters continued to battle hot spots through 5:30 a.m. Displaced residents are anticipating the Red Cross' assistance.
