New England Aquarium biologists will try to figure out what caused the death of an 800 pound sea turtle found floating Saturday near Woods Hole, Mass.
The endangered Leatherback turtles are the largest breed of turtles and one of the largest reptiles in the world according to the aquarium.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police found the turtle and towed it to a boat ramp near Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The reptile had to be moved by an industrial forklift to a rescue vehicle.
Aquarium officials said the turtle appeared to have been dead for a few days. The turtle will undergo a necropsy Sunday at a sea turtle hospital in Quincy.
Initial indicators show the turtle might have died from getting its flippers caught in fishing gear lines and later drowning aquarium officials said.
