A man charged in a downtown Boston assault last year is now facing charges for violating the victim's civil rights.
Twenty-four-year-old Ryan Sugrue of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, was arrested for the Nov. 30 attack on New Chardon Street. A 37-year-old Chelsea man was attacked while walking to work around 1:30 a.m.
Prosecutors now say the attack was a hate crime, as Sugrue hurled ethnic slurs at the victim, who tried to cross the street to avoid the suspect. Sugrue then allegedly punched and kicked the victim.
Having already been arraigned for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Sugrue was arraigned Wednesday for the civil rights violation.
Bail has been set at $1,000. Sugrue is due back in court on May 27.
