A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of a bicyclist in Boston's Back Bay last month, according to police.
Twenty-five-year-old Malone Kidanemariam of Boston was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death eight days after the crash, police announced Tuesday evening.
He's due in court Wednesday. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
In a statement, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans thanked his detectives for their hard work and the public who called the department's tip line.
"When a motorist strikes a pedestrian or cyclist in the City of Boston, the individual behind the wheel is expected to stop, check on the welfare of the person struck and call 9-1-1 for help," Evans' statement said. "For whatever reason, the suspect in this case chose not to do that, and, given the charges he's now facing, I would imagine he most certainly wishes he had."
Kidanemariam is accused of hitting 30-year-old Rick Archer just after 3 a.m. on April 30 at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street. Archer, a bike courier who lived in South Boston, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in critical condition, where he passed away days later.
Investigators found the car that was allegedly involved in the hit-and-run, which was described as a silver sedan, inside a Boston garage after getting a tip from an alert security guard, Evans said on May 2.
"We have some good evidence and we'll get them," he said at the time.
A second bicyclist was traveling with Archer at the time, but was not injured in the hit-and-run.
