The chief of police in New Bedford, Massachusetts, died Sunday evening.
David Provencher passed away around 7:30 p.m. from a respiratory arrest, according to the office of Mayor Jon Mitchell.
"New Bedford lost an outstanding police chief and a great man," Mitchell said in a statement. "Our prayers go out to Dave's family. We will do everything in our power to support them at this most difficult time."
Provencher spent 35 years as a New Bedford Police officer. He has served as the department's chief for the last five years.
