9 Injured in 8-Vehicle I-95 Crash in North Attleboro; 2 Seriously Hurt: Police

Investigators say the crash appears to have started when a 29-year-old Roslindale woman was driving in the right lane on I-95 southbound

A multi-vehicle crash in Attleboro shut down the northbound lanes of I-95.

Nine people were taken to hospitals after a crash on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts Friday morning, including two who were being treated for serious injuries, according to state police.

State police said earlier that one person had been critically injured in the crash that happened just before 6:30 a.m. that tangled traffic on the highways

Investigators say the crash appears to have started when a 29-year-old Roslindale woman was driving in the right lane on I-95 southbound, just north of exit 5 in North Attleboro in a 2010 Toyota Corolla when her car crossed into the middle lane, hitting a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The force from the impact of the crash caused both cars to veer to the left lane and then across the median and into the highway's northbound lanes, hitting six other cars: a 2007 Hyundai Tuscon; a 2016 Kia Optima; a 2004 Volvo S40; a 2107 Nissan Rogue; a 2004 Toyota Camry; and a 2005 Honda Odyssey.

The driver of the Toyota and her passenger, a 25-year-old Brockton woman, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Silverado pickup truck, identified only as a 38-year-old Tewksbury man, was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with minor injuries.

State police say the Hyundai's driver, the Kia Optima's driver and passenger, the driver of the Volvo, the driver of the Nissan and the driver of the Honda were all taken to Rhode Island Hospital and Sturdy Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Investigators say it's unclear why the driver of the Toyota veered into the lanes and across the median.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
