Supporters of a new Massachusetts law that prohibits discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations are celebrating their legislative victory.
Attorney General Maura Healey, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate President Stan Rosenberg and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh - all Democrats - were among those participating in a bill signing ceremony on the steps of the Statehouse on Monday.
The bill was officially signed into law on Friday by Republican Gov. Charlie Baker in the privacy of his office. Baker did not attend the public celebration but participants at the event applauded when Healey thanked him for his signature.
Baker had been noncommittal on the measure until recent weeks.
Among other things, the law allows transgender people to use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity.
