MSPCA hosting weekend adopt-a-thon with no adoption fees for small pets

Clear the Shelters runs through Sept. 10

NBC10 Boston, Telemundo and other NBC stations across the country have been working to help clear the shelters. We’re in the final few days of our campaign, so here are some of the furry friends up for adoption.

Thousands of pets, big and small, are hoping to find their "fur-ever" home in a shelter near you this weekend.

"Summer is a really busy time in animal shelters. We see the biggest intake numbers of animals in our shelters, so now is the time that we need folks to — if they're thinking about adoption, make today the day and come down and take one of these great animals home," said Corinne Bourgoin, MSPCA-Angell shelter operations supervisor.

As part of NBC's month-long Clear the Shelters event , several local shelters, including at MSPCA-Angell in Boston, are having an adopt-a-thon this weekend where they're waiving adoption fees for all small animals. We’re thankful for Sullivan Tire's support in making the event extra special and helping us create more happy endings for our furry friends.

"Most people think about dogs and cats as adoptable animals in animal shelters, but they don't realize we have all kinds of animals, so we've got rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters, ferrets, birds, hedgehogs — kind of anything you can think of, you can probably find at an animal shelter," Bourgoin said.

There are plenty of pets available for adoption at Massachusetts shelters, and the MSPCA is waiving adoption fees for small animals like birds, rabbits and hamsters this weekend, amid our Clear the Shelters campaign in collaboration with Sullivan Tires.

And it's especially important to find the "paw-fect" home for older pets like 10-year-old "Brock," who loves belly rubs and "Jujubee" and has allergies that will need some extra love and care.

"The really young animals, the ones that are extra cute or don't have any medical issues are going to go home pretty quickly," said Bourgoin. "And it's the ones who are maybe going to be shy, hiding in the back of their cage or maybe they need someone who's going to take on some of their medical care in the future, they're so deserving, they're so worth it and they just need a special person to come forward and take a chance on them."

Clear the Shelters runs through Sept. 10.
