One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Friday morning involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 495 in Middleborough, Massachusetts.

State police said the crash, which involved four vehicles, occurred around 11:30 a.m. on I-495 north.

According to police, a preliminary investigation shows a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer unit was traveling along the highway when, for reasons still under investigation, it rear-ended three vehicles slowing for traffic.

The driver of a GMC Terrain was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead. Police have identified him as a 71-year-old West Wareham man but they have not publicly released his name.

The operator of another vehicle involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital in Brockton, police said. The other two drivers involved did not report any injuries.

All northbound lanes of the highway near Exit 12 were shut down for two hours, with traffic being diverted off I-495 at Route 105.

The crash remains under investigation. It's unclear if any charges will be filed.
