A man was killed and another man was arrested on a murder charge in an early morning shooting at a Waterville, Maine, nursing home parking lot Tuesday, police said.

The body of Stephen Killam, a 47-year-old from Fairfield, was found in the parking lot of the Mount Joseph at Waterville nursing home on Highwood Street after gunshots were reported to local police about 6:29 a.m., state police said.

After witnesses reported a black pickup truck leave the scene, and shared its license plate, it was tracked to nearby Clinton, and driver Richard Hatt, a 53-year-old from Clinton, was taken into custody about two-and-a-half hours later, according to police.

Hatt was arrested and booked in Kennebc County Jail on a murder charge, police said.

The shooting remained under investigation Tuesday evening, police said, noting that an autopsy on Killam was due to be performed Wednesday, and that anyone with information was asked to reach out to Waterville or state police.

Investigators didn't share what they suspect led to the shooting, which led local school districts Waterville Public Schools and MSAD 49 in Fairfield to temporarily lock down their buildings, according to News Center Maine. Both districts later returned to normal operations.
