A person was shot early Tuesday morning after a fight broke out at a restaurant in Lawrence, Massachusetts, according to police.

A man was arrested later in the day, Lawrence police said.

The Lawrence Police Department responded to a report of a fight just after 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Blue Lounge, on the corner of Canal and Amesbury Streets, according to Detective Thomas Cuddy. As police made their way there, more calls came in reporting shots fired at the same location, officers said.

When authorities arrived, they found the victim, who had apparent gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and EMTs, before being taken to the hospital, and is expected to recover.

Gregory Coito, a 32-year-old from Haverhill, was arrested on charges including armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.

He was due to face the charges in Lawrence District Court; it wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to the charges.

The Lawrence Police Detectives Division was investigating, with the help of the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
