Police Identify Bicyclist Fatally Struck by Car

Police say the victim was walking his bike across Bald Hill Road when he was hit by a car.

A bicyclist who was killed after being struck by a car in Warwick was a former legislative aide to Democratic presidential candidate and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

A Chafee spokeswoman on Monday said Charles Hawkins worked as a legislative aide on transportation and energy issues to Chafee and his father, John Chafee, while they were in the Senate.

Police say 64-year-old Hawkins of North Providence was walking his bike across Bald Hill Road when he was hit by a car at about 6 p.m. Friday. He died a short time later at Rhode Island Hospital.

Chafee said in a statement Monday that he and his father enjoyed working with Hawkins.

Police say it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
