A police chase that began in Johnston, Rhode Island, ended in Providence with a shooting involving an officer early Monday morning, reported WJAR-TV.
Earlier Monday morning, police in the town of North Providence issued an alert regarding a vehicle connected to a shooting in Providence, according to WJAR-TV.
Johnston police said the pursuit started just before 2 a.m. after the suspect was seen in town.
That chase, according to police, came to a stop in the area of Maynard and Unit streets in Providence, where two people got out of the car and fled on foot.
The officer followed and Johnston police said one of the suspects fired at the officer. The officer then shot back at the suspects, according to WJAR-TV.
While the officer wasn't hit by the suspect's gunfire, according to police, it wasn't immediately known if the suspect was hit by the officer's bullet.
