1 dead after van rolls over in crash on I-95, Mass. state police say; 1 in custody

One person is dead and another is in custody after a crash on Interstate 95 in the Danvers-Boxford area Friday afternoon, according to Massachusetts authorities.

State police said the crash took place in Danvers, while the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the crash was in Boxford.

Three vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crash, MassDOT said. One of the vehicles rolled over, with two people being ejected. MassDOT said one was pronounced dead at the scene while another was airlifted to a Boston hospital.

Two other people remained in the vehicle that rolled over and were taken to an area hospital for treatment, MassDOT said. No information was available about the injured people's conditions.

MassDOT said two people fled on foot from the first vehicle that crashed into the woods. Police detained one person, and police were looking for the second Friday evening, MassDOT said. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing helicopter and K9 units were involved in the search.

Footage from the scene showed a white van on its roof in the median of the highway, with one side ripped open. Lanes on both sides of the highway were closed.
