There is an event called Eurekafest happening all weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Evan Dutch, a high school student who is a member of one of the teams participating in the event, and Joshua Schuler, executive director of the Lemelson MIT program, joined NECN to discuss the event.

Schuler explained that the Lemelson MIT gives out a series of prizes and grants throughout the year. Eurekafest is their opportunity to meet the students, showcase their achievements, and talk about the next steps.

Dutch, 18, explained his group’s specific project, which was to create a simple water filter using clay and gravel that dispenses 99% clean water.

“What we’re really excited about is clay is available all over the world, so we’re hoping to implement this in more places, but Haiti is just our first step,” Dutch said.
