2 dead after multi-vehicle crash in New Salem, Mass.; several others hurt

The victims were identified Monday as 89-year-old Gerald and 74-year-old Margaret Patriquin, of Gardner

Two people were killed and several others were injured when three vehicles collided on Route 202 in New Salem, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon.

State police said they responded to the crash around 2 p.m. and found three vehicles had been involved in a crash, according to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. One of the vehicles involved was a commercial dump truck.

Both the driver and passenger in one of the vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified Monday as 89-year-old Gerald and 74-year-old Margaret Patriquin of Gardner.

A 45-year-old Chicopee man, the driver of one of the other two vehicles, was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, and the driver of another vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Orange, was treated at Athol Memorial Hospital. Both are expected to survive.

Route 202 was shut down for several hours while the roadway was cleared.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The chief medical examiner's office will determine the causes of death.

No charges are expected to be filed, according to authorities.
