Interstate 190 was closed in Worcester for hours on Wednesday amid what appeared to be a major police investigation.
Police were called to the scene about 3:40 p.m. for reports of a man on the highway with a gun, state police said. They noted the scene was secure and a man was in custody, but didn't share more information, including whether anyone was hurt or what took place.
A large number of police officers were at the scene, walking together on the highway.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said about 4 p.m. that the highway was closed at Exit 2. They said it had reopened just after 7:30 p.m.
Also Wednesday, Worcester police urged drivers to avoid I-190 because of heavy traffic. It wasn't immediately clear if that was related. They initially shared a post saying to avoid I-90, but that post was deleted.
A shooting was reported earlier in Worcester, sending a person to the hospital; it wasn't immediately clear if that was related to the incident on I-190, either.
