The final weekend of our 10th annual Clear the Shelters campaign is Sept. 6-8, and we're kicking things off Friday, Sept. 6, at the MSPCA's Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.
The MSPCA and some of its Massachusetts animal shelter support coalition partners are wrapping up summer events by waiving fees for small animals this weekend.
The “Pink Piggy Club” adoption event, inspired by pop star Chappell Roan, comes as shelters are filled with large populations of small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs.
“People are often surprised to hear shelters have small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits in our care,” said MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley. “They usually get them from pet shops that don’t know they’re selling mixed genders, and the animals breed quickly, which can leave people with far more pets than they’re able to care for.”
Shelter officials say those animals tend to stay in shelters weeks longer than their dog and cat counterparts.
Our NBC10 and Telemundo crews will be out there from 1:30-6:30 p.m.
And our local sponsor Sullivan Tire will be on site offering coupons for discounts on auto services to anyone who comes out to adopt.
Plus, you can enter to win a basket of goodies for your pet thanks, in part, to our national sponsor, Hill's Pet Nutrition.
Many of our shelters are holding adoption events for the weekend. Check for a participating shelter near you.
